A monthly REAL WORLD math blog link-up hosted by MissMathDork,

This months’ MIRL post comes to you via a very quick lunchroom conversation!  As you know (all too well…) testing season is upon us.  The math department chair stopped me in the lunch room for some battery buying advice.   The conversation went something like this (keep in mind this was in the span of about 20 seconds):

Her:  “Hey, can I walk through my battery buying plan?”

Me: “Absolutely!”

Her:  “We need batteries for 155 calculators.”

Me: (mentally) 155 x 4 = 600 + 20 = 620 “So we need 620 batteries”

Her: “Yes, but there are 32 batteries in a bulk pack”

Me: “Hmmm, so 8 calculators per bulk pack.”

Her:  “Yep, much easier calculation”

Me: “I agree.  So 8 per pack, we need 155.  8×20 = 160, so 20 packs?”

Her: “Yep, that’s what I was thinking – just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something”

Friend next to me: “What the heck just happened?!”

Her: “Awesome, I’ll go write the purchase order.”

Me: “Great – let me know if you need help picking them up!”

And so in about 20 seconds, we made two people’s  head spin with some quick calculations to make testing go smoothly.  May not seem extraordinary but at this time of the year it was definitely math in our real life!

Don’t forget to check out the other MIRL posts below!  Check back over the next few days – more will be added!!
